And the bombs, unsophisticated. The targeted places not really significant, not overly crowded even. Not too many people dead. Not a great many injured. But they seem to have achieved what they were supposed to have. Panic, disruption of lives and an awareness of our vulnerability. Terrorist acts, I feel, have two aspects to them. The act itself. What actually has happened. And the shadow it casts. Or what could have happened. Fear is fanned. Suppressed it will be, by logic. But it lurks nevertheless. The act itself is the cost we pay, the terrorists and us, for what the terrorists want to achieve. And the cost we pay is determined by how much we can withstand and how far the terrorists are willing to go. And then, there's the kind that is so overpowering it leaves you gasping... like the Niagara Falls. When I headed out to the Niagara Falls, I hoped I wouldn't be disappointed and I hoped it would live up to everything everybody had told me about it. And when I did get there, I wondered what it was that I wasn't told that hadn't prepared me for something this breathtaking. The huge crowd and the long wait we'd just been through (oh yes, there's no escaping that of course!) was instantly forgotten. Words fail to paint that picture. And pictures fail to capture how you would feel when you stand and stare up at that enormous wall of water, hear that deafening roar, walk into that silvery mist at the base of the falls and gleefully get drenched in that icy-cold spray! The white shroud traded for the richer green. The weather pleasant. The sunlight subdued by the clouds. It looked mellow. Unlike <a href="http://archanak.livejournal.com/22347.html#cutid1">last time</a>, there was no extremity of the subzero temperature, there was no sharpness of the shadows cast by the bright but cold sunlight which had accentuated the terrain of the canyon. But it was just as spectacular, just as breathtaking, just as overwhelming. The suddenness with which the canyon comes upon you is amazing. All you see is a straight line at the horizon, just like a flat piece of land, with no hint whatsoever of the sheer drop just a little way ahead. And then the canyon opens up. Enormous. Magnificient. And leaves you feeling absolutely wonderstruck. <br /><br />A few minutes away from sunrise... A few miles away from the canyon... With its varied landscape. I like how it changes with every couple of hundreds of miles you travel. And I like how it changes with the seasons too. The arid flatness changes to gentle grassy slopes which change to steep rocky mountains. The low shrubs and cacti change to tall green trees and sprays of fragile flowers and tranquil lakes. All within twp hours of drive. Everywhere looked so different from last time. Remnants of the magic sprung by spring. The cold whiteness of the snow replaced by lush greenery. The cacti looked colourful too. It was like walking into a whole other era. Rickety structures. Isolation. Dead quiet. And the beautiful desert landscape, vast and bare, with cacti standing tall all around. Dollar bills, and even some foreign currency cover every bit of the walls, supposedly left behind by their numerous customers over the years. The ASU vs UCLA football game on saturday was all about splashes of maroon and gold, Sparky the mascot, beautiful fireworks and the huge Sun Devil stadium brimming with enthusiasm. The game was being broadcast live; and funnily, the players took a break every time a commercial break was due on TV! It takes quite a lot of prioritization and I'm in no mood to do that now. The "big" things that are going to be missed have been pondered over and come to terms with. I guess what I'll miss most are the little things noticed only in their absence. And then there are the "not-used-much" things that figure so much at the bottom of the "what-to=pack" list that they have eventually been moved to the "what-NOT-to-pack" list. I'll miss these too. For the first time in my life, I'm actually sick of shopping. I've had nightmares about out-of-control shopping-lists that can't be kept up with. Finally, all that had to be done (most of it atleast) seems to be done. Student-life beckons; and looks fun too (yes yes I know its hard work and responsibilities and blah and blah but it should be pretty great!). My next post would be from my new home for the next two years and after some kind of routine has appeared again in life. For now, its bye!
